Without a coordinated effort, Seattle is at risk of losing 70% of its forests in just 20 years. Join us and 1,000 of your neighbors for Green Seattle Day 2011.  This event is the kick off to our planting season and is a celebration of our neighborhood parks and committed neighbors. Green Seattle Day is a fun way for you and your family to get involved by planting native trees and shrubs in a park near you.

We are still in the early planning stages for this event. When we have more information we will send it your way with information about how to register to participate at a specific park.

Highway 101 Revisited: South Olympics Workshop

Where: Port of Grays Harbor Building in Aberdeen Show Map

When: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Thursday, Jun 14th 2012

Contact: Jeff Aken - .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Register online now for this free workshop. Note: we are offering a parallel workshop in Port Angeles: click here for information.

We all have an idea in our minds of what a strong, vibrant downtown looks like. Maybe it’s a place where locals and visitors alike want to spend time, filled with attractive, thriving businesses, where buildings are well designed, and roads work for people and cars, with ties to its roots. A place that feels like a real place. Making that vision a reality, however, can be a challenge.

Workshop Overview

The Highway 101 Revisited workshops will bring stakeholders together from around the Olympic Peninsula to explore how to energize downtown areas, focusing on urban design, historic preservation and economic development.

The free workshops will focus on the barriers, opportunities and support needed to build economically vibrant downtowns that have strong connections to surrounding neighborhoods, support local business, create more housing choices, promote adaptive reuse, preserve historic structures and create a sense of place. These workshops are made possible as part of a grant Forterra received from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

Participants at the Highway 101 Revisited workshop will:
• Explore how historic preservation and urban design can contribute to economic development
• Learn about programs, resources and easy-to-implement strategies for downtown improvement projects
• Connect with organizations and individuals pursuing downtown revitalization efforts in their communities

Technical Assistance

In addition to the two workshops, Forterra will partner with two communities, providing free technical assistance related to the grant’s focal areas (economic development, historic preservation, urban design) during the second half of 2012. The type of assistance offered will depend on the unique needs identified by the communities selected, but could include guidance on developing complete streets and active transportation plans, acquiring Certified Local Government status or engaging citizens in the planning process. Communities will be selected based on the willingness of community partners to collaborate in the proposed project, the relevance of assistance requested to the grant’s focal topics and the feasibility of completing the assistance by fall 2012. For more information, please contact Jeff Aken at jaken@forterra.org or 206.905.6928.

Directions/Parking

The Port of Grays Harbor Commission Room is located in the Port’s Administration building at 111 South Wooding St in Aberdeen. There is parking just across the street from the offices, behind LG Isaacson Co. (the cream-colored building).

From points east, take Highway 12-W to Aberdeen, where it becomes Wishkah St/Highway 101). Stay on Wishkah St (go straight when 101 turns right towards Hoquiam). Wishkah St. will become Port Industrial Rd. Turn right onto South Wooding St. The Port offices will be on your left.

From points west and northwest, take 101-S into downtown Aberdeen. About 11 blocks after crossing the bridge, turn right onto Myrtle St. Take your third left onto Port Industrial Rd, then your third left onto S Wooding St. The Port offices will be on your left.

Mobilizing Volunteers for the Urban Forest

The 2012 Urban Forest Symposium will address the concerns of municipalities, NGOs and educational groups whose work involves volunteer planting and care for the urban forest. This year’s speakers understand what it takes to have a truly successful program. Our keynoter, world‐renowned speaker and practical visionary Andy Lipkis, will share the story of Los Angeles’ TreePeople. From planting one million trees for the 1984 Olympics to using trees and forest‐inspired technology to make cities sustainable, TreePeople has become an influential, 10,000‐volunteer organization. Throughout the day representatives from a variety of non‐profit organizations will share what has, and what has not worked to motivate volunteers and secure funding. The technical track will cover how to avoid common problems with volunteer tree planting projects and how to set your project on track for long‐term success. It will also have the latest on best practices for tree planting.

Keynote address by Andy Lipkis, founder of TreePeople, Los Angeles

Forterra Staff members Joanna Nelson and Kristen Kosidowski will be speaking about Engaging Volunteers and Fundraising and Financing Strategies respectively.

To see a compelete schedule or to register CLICK HERE to navigate to UW Botanical Gardens website

The 4th Annual Urban Forest Symposium is funded in part by the USDA Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources ‐ Urban and Community Forestry, the Northwest Horticultural Society and King County. *********************************************************************************************

When: April 21 from 10 am - 2 pm

Where: Duwamish Hill Preserve

About the Event: Join hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers who will roll up their sleeves to help restore the Duwamish River on April 21. This is a great way to celebrate Earth Day through action! Duwamish Alive! is a chance for people to reclaim the river.  On this day volunteers will work to plant native species.

About the Property:

In 2001, Forterra (formerly the Cascade Land Conservancy), the City of Tukwila, and a local citizen group formed a partnership to work for the preservation of an undeveloped parcel of land on the Duwamish River.  The property will be managed as a public open space preserve devoted to the interpretation of the site’s Native American cultural significance and other aspects of Duwamish River Valley natural and cultural history.  The Hill is culturally significant for its association with southern Puget Sound Salish oral tradition and history, as a key location in the stories collectively known as the “Epic of the Winds.”

Please come out and contribute to this effort!

What to bring:

Please remember to dress for the weather.  Suggested Dress: Boots or comfortable athletic shoes, work clothes, rain gear and appropriate layers.  Volunteers should bring a refillable water bottle.  Snacks, drinks, tools and gloves will be provided.

Where: We will meet at the parking lot at the base of the preserve at 10am. The address of the preserve and parking lot is 3800 S 115th St Tukwila, WA 98168

Green Seattle Day

Where: Parks Throughout Seattle Show Map

When: 10:28 am - 4:03 pm Saturday, Nov 5th 2011

Contact: Katie Cava - .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Without a coordinated effort, we are at risk of losing 70% of our forests in just 20 years. The Green Seattle Partnership is reversing the trend by mobilizing thousands of volunteers to restore 2,500 acres by 2025.

Seattle parks need your help.  Please join us and 1,000 of your neighbors for Green Seattle Day to kick off the 2011/2012 planting season.

Green Seattle Day is more than a restoration event, it is a recognition of the benefits of our urban forests, a celebration of our commitment to a healthy city, and a statement of Seattle’s civic-minded values.

Most importantly Green Seattle Day is a fun way for you and your family to get involved by planting native trees and shrubs in a park near you.  Come out on November 7th to Cheasty Greenspace or a park near you to help keep Seattle green.
